A federal jury in San Antonio ordered the FDA to immediately recall the drug Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, also known as sildenafil, is one of the most popular and widely prescribed medications in the U. S. today. But the FDA's decision doesn't stop there. It's not the first time the FDA has ordered Viagra to be recalled.
The FDA recently announced that it plans to take a voluntary recall of a drug sold in some of the country's largest drug manufacturers and the largest supplier of Viagra.
The FDA says it will take the "inflamed" medication voluntarily from pharmacies and mail order manufacturers before it is sold to consumers.
The recall also includes a warning that a "potentially serious adverse reaction" to the drug may occur if a person takes the medication on an empty stomach, with or without food, in the past two weeks.
"It is very important that people with serious medical conditions be informed about the potential serious adverse reactions associated with Viagra, including signs of a heart attack or stroke, or severe liver or kidney disease," the FDA said in a statement. "Consumers should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of a serious reaction like chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, or sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, or sudden and severe loss of hearing."
The FDA also told users that it was "notifying" consumers about a possible "serious adverse reaction" to Viagra.
"We don't know if this adverse reaction occurred during the past two weeks," said Dr. Jorge Puente, the FDA's director of vigilance and risk management.
Puente added that some other drugs may be more likely to cause "serious adverse reactions" in some people. For instance, Viagra's manufacturer, Pfizer, is expected to make a recall of the drug in the next few days.
The FDA did not provide a date for the FDA to determine whether the drugmaker will sell the drug to consumers and will not recommend a recall.
"These adverse reactions are very concerning for consumers and they will only be reported to the FDA and may not be the result of a consumer's professional opinion," Puente said.
The FDA has already received a number of reports of adverse reactions from consumers who are taking medications containing sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra.
The FDA has also asked manufacturers to make the drug available to more people who already have erectile dysfunction.

Health Canada's FDA says it will take the "inflamed" drug voluntarily from pharmacies and mail order manufacturers before it is sold to consumers, said the agency in a news release.Health Canada has asked manufacturers to make sildenafil available to more people who already have erectile dysfunction. The drug sildenafil is also sold in Canada under the brand name Viagra, the agency said. The agency asked about a "potentially serious adverse reaction" to Viagra that may occur if a person takes it on an empty stomach, with or without food in the past two weeks. The FDA said that if a person is taking the drug on an empty stomach, with or without food, in the past two weeks, they may develop a heart attack, stroke, or a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, or sudden loss of hearing. People who took sildenafil on an empty stomach or with food would be at a greater risk of developing serious adverse reactions.
The agency said the drug should be taken under the supervision of a health care practitioner, who can evaluate the risk of adverse reactions and advise patients on the best way to take it.
The FDA said it is not advising consumers to stop taking sildenafil because it may not work as intended and may cause serious side effects, including dangerously low blood pressure or fainting. Sildenafil can cause a person to stop sexual activity, especially when taken with nitrates. People who take nitrates must take a blood pressure-lowering drug every day.
The FDA also said the drug may cause "signs of a heart attack or stroke."
The agency is also asking that all prescriptions for the drug be filled by a health care practitioner who can evaluate the risks and benefits of sildenafil and advise patients on the best way to take it.The FDA has asked for patients to report adverse reactions to health care professionals if they occur or if they develop them.
